Employee Assistance Program (EAP)



The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is available to:
  1. Active Duty members and their dependents 
  2. Reservists/dependents if activated for over 30 days. (Reservists and their dependents activated less than 30 days allowed  only crisis phone counseling, starting the first day of active duty.)
  3. Full-time Civil Service employees and their dependents 
  4. Full-time Exchange System and MWR employees and their dependents

The Employee Assistance Program provides: 

  1. Confidential professional assessment and short term counseling (1-6 visits) and referral services; 
  2. Help with personal, job or family problems; 
  3. Legal consultation - free 1/2 hour with an attorney by phone or in person. Additional visits or services are available at discounted rates.
  4. Financial consultation with financial professional 
  5. Free prenatal, child safety, college, and adult care kits at worklife4you.com

Most people self refer, but there are other types of referrals: 

  1. Formal Referral - by a supervisors to the EAP for problems that have occurred on the job. Employee/member must agree to referral.
  2. Informal Referral - by a supervisor, family member, co-worker or health provider due to the identification of a problem that is not necessarily work performance oriented.
  3. Mandatory Referral by the Command - The formal and mandatory referral of an employee to the Employee Assistance Program as a result of a confirmed positive drug test.

Program Confidentiality 

  1. All contacts with the Employee Assistance Program are held in the strictest confidence. 
  2. To maintain privacy and confidentiality the Coast Guard contracts the Employee Assistance Program services with an outside organization to operate the Employee Assistance Program.
  3. In no way does using the Employee Assistance Program affect an employee's chances of promotion or advancement. 
  4. Service members, civilians and family members deal directly with this national network of providers. The Employee Assistance Program does not reveal the user's identity to the Coast Guard.
  5. Any discussion with an Employee Assistance Program counselor is confidential and protected by law. The only exceptions to the confidentiality are in cases of child abuse and specific state-enforced laws addressing family violence (where reporting is mandatory), suicide and imminent harm to another.
